Crystal Cliffs at Tettegouche State Park
Crystal Cliffs – easy hike to an unbelievable view
Looking for a quick hike to unbelievable Lake Superior Views? Then this North Shore MN hiking trail is for you! Hike to the edge of Crystal Cliffs at Tettegouche State Park.
Lake Superior’s cliffs near Crystal Bay
Crystal Bay is surrounded by tall cliffs. Standing near the edge of the cliff gives you a panoramic view of the rugged Lake Superior shoreline of Tettetouche State Park. The sight of Lake Superior’s endless blue waters is truly breathtaking!
Pop-up thunderstorms were happening up and down the North Shore on the day of my visit. It’s easy to see these over the vast expanse of Lake Superior. The one below was pretty cool to see off in the distance near Tettegouch State Park.
How to get to Crystal Cliffs at Tettegouche State Park
This scenic overlook is within Tettegouche State Park, but you’ll want to park along Highway 61 in Illgen City. There is a pull-off just east of Highway 1 and Crystal Creek. You probably wouldn’t notice it if you weren’t looking.
There are two trails. One goes downhill to Crystal Bay and Crystal Creek. To get to the cliffs, follow the trail going over the hill, there’s a yellow State Park sign marking it.
In July (at the time of my visit), the forest is like a jungle because of the thick and lush fauna. After I saw this, it reminded me to go back to the car to apply a healthy coating of bug spray (glad I did)! The first part of the trail is a skinny path through overgrown foliage.
Not far down the path, the jungle opens up to a rocky landscape with smaller shrubs, tall pines, and an incredible cliff-top view of Lake Superior! Explore the open rocky area and see the view from different angles. Stand at the edge of the cliff to see the dramatic shoreline and endless blue waters of Lake Superior.
This is a great North Shore MN Hiking trail if you’re looking for a quick and easy hike to an amazing view!
