Hovland Arts Festival: Local Art on the North Shore

You wouldn’t think that Hovland, MN would have such a popular event! It’s located kind of in the middle of nowhere, about 20 miles northeast of Grand Marais on the North Shore of Lake Superior. But the Hovland Arts Festival draws a wide attendance because of it’s variety of high quality artists and makers, live music, food, and a friendly, festive scene.

Most of the artists are from the Hovland/Grand Portage/Grand Marais area, which makes it a Mecca for locally-made goods.

Around back are the welcoming vibes of live music under the pavilion, and a playground for the kids. Dogs frolic together on the lawn and groups gather in conversation.

Historic Trinity Lutheran Church

Trinity Lutheran Church serves food inside the church, which shares a parking lot with the Hovland Town Hall. Admire the unique architecture and design of the historic church. It was built in 1946 and was said to be a, “collaboration leading to an exciting adventure in realizing God’s creativity.” That speaks to the community that built the church as well as building’s use of natural rock, local wood, and design that harmonizes with the rugged setting of the North Shore.
