Snowmobile Drag Races – Devil Track Lake
Snowmobile Drag Races at Skyport Lodge
If you’re looking for a rip-roaring good time in the dead of winter, the Snowmobile Drag Races at Skyport Lodge is the place to be! Sanctioned by the Cook County Snowmobile Club, snowmobiles race in a head-to-head competition on the quarter-mile track. Skyport Lodge is the gracious host with the race track located in their backyard atop the frozen Devil Track Lake.
Even in the sub-zero temperatures, which it can often be in January, Sledheads come in droves to the Snowmobile Drag Races on Devil Track Lake. You know what we say! “There’s no bad weather, only bad gear!”
Skyport Lodge is the Host
The races take place on a groomed quarter-mile track on Devil Track Lake, right outside of Skyport Lodge. Because of the proximity of the lodge, it’ really the perfect location for this cold-weather event. Skyport has a bonfire where groups gather to warm up. And the Raven Rock Grill served up hot food and cool drink specials all day. They also open the Community Room with a bar for a larger less-crowded place to warm up and gather.
There’s nothing like the anticipation of watching the light countdown to green and seeing the sleds take off in front of a spray of snow! The speed and the noise of the machines flying down the track are absolutely thrilling. And you can get pretty close – the spectator area is just off to the side of the starting line.
Sledheads Come in Droves
Throughout the day snowmobiles arrive from points all around Devil Track Lake and beyond. Locals come on snowmobile from their homes, visitors come from their cabins and from as far away at Two Harbors and Isabella. Skyport Lodge is easy to access from the North Shore State Snowmobile Trail making it a super convenient location. Of course, a few lucky ones stay right at Skyport Lodge. They have six lodge rooms and three cabins that get booked pretty quickly for this highly anticipated event.
After the races, trophies are presented to the winners at the after-party. The party continues with live music through the evening.
This small, family-owned resort is located on Devil Track Lake, eight miles from Grand Marais. They are open year-round with six lodge rooms and three cabins. It’s a mecca for snowmobilers in the wintertime, and a fantastic lakeside getaway in the summer! The Raven Rock Grill is on-site for lakeside drinks & dining. Whether you’re looking for a quiet romantic getaway or an extended family vacation, I recommend Skyport Lodge.
